The “Parcs et Jardins de Wallonie” (Wallonia Parks and Gardens)  association aims to help park and garden managers to maintain a high level of quality while preserving and enhancing the specific features of each site. The association also aims to promote differentiated management and build up a network of professionals in the sector to improve the upkeep, promotion and management of sites through exchanges, meetings and training.

A key aspect of their work is the awarding of the “Jardin Remarquable” (Remarkable Garden)  label, launched by the French Ministry of Culture in 2004, which aims to promote parks and gardens for their cultural, aesthetic, historical or botanical interest. The label is awarded on the basis of stringent quality criteria, such as the organisation of spaces, integration into the site, the presence of remarkable features, botanical and historical interest, visitor facilities and respect for the environment.

In Wallonia, the ASBL “Parcs & Jardins de Wallonie”, with the help of a panel of experts set up for the purpose, is responsible for awarding this label. Certified parks can then become members of the Association des Amis des Jardins Remarquables Européens (AAJRE) and enjoy international renown. By inviting owners of parks/gardens accessible to the public to make themselves known, the association encourages the expansion of this network and the ongoing promotion of quality in the management of green spaces.

Wallonia has currently 19 Remarkable Gardens. To find out more, visit  www.pajawa.be.
